Arctic Sea Trout Camp
Five nights at a fjord camp near Alta and four guided days for sea-run trout on the Arctic coast. Book the camp for your own group, or join a shared week.
Overview
Fly fishing the Arctic fjords of Alta for sea-run brown trout. In May and June the sea warms up, the trout move from the rivers out into the fjords, close to shore to feed, and they patrol the shallows with the tides. You wade the beaches and fish shrimp and baitfish patterns. Demanding fishing, and rewarding, and a kind of fly fishing most anglers have never tried. Five nights at a camp near Alta, four full days of guided fishing, and all the meals taken care of. Your guide knows the right beaches and tides. From the middle of May the sun doesn't go down in Alta. Come with your own group and the camp is yours, or join a shared week with up to two other anglers.

The water
The fjords around Alta, at the top of Norway at 70° north. Wading from the shore, in water you can read once someone has shown you how.
Best timing
Spring into early summer. After the winter in the rivers, sea trout drop out to the fjords to feed, and they feed hard along the shallows. From mid-May the sun doesn't set in Alta, so the fishing day is as long as you want it to be.
The fishing
Sea trout are sea-run brown trout. They spend the winter in the rivers, then head out to the salt in spring to feed on shrimp, sand eels and small fish along the shore. In the fjord they turn bright silver and grow fast. Most of the fishing is wading the shallows with a single-hand rod and a sinking or intermediate line, stripping shrimp patterns and small baitfish flies. The fish move with the tide, and a beach that was empty at noon can be full of fish two hours later. That's what the guide is for: knowing where they'll be, and when. We've fished sea trout on the Arctic coast of Norway for years, and it's some of our favourite fishing anywhere. On a good day you'll land several, and the fish of a lifetime might just be swimming in these waters. How good do you need to be? If you can cast a single-hand rod into a bit of wind, you'll be fine. The guide will help with the rest.
